How to save money on skincare

You don’t have to break the bank for a good skincare routine. There are so many ways to have one while saving money. You can stil have a good skincare routine even if you’re ok a budget. This article will provide a few tips you can use to minimize your spending on skincare, and have a budget friendly skincare routine.

1. Minimise Skincare Tools for a Simpler Routine

The truth is, you do not need fancy tools to wash your face or to apply products. Your hands are all you need to wash your face or apply products. Using cleansing tools like face brushes can lead to over-exfoliation and damage your skin. If you are trying to save money on your skincare routine, ditch buying/using skincare tools and just apply skincare products using your hands.

2. Use Multifunctional Skincare Products

In recent years, we’ve seen the rise of single active products. Although these present a lower risk of irritation and are usually cheaper than multifunctional products, single-active ingredient products tend to only serve one purpose. Unless of course, the active ingredient is multifunctional. Otherwise, single active formulations tend to only target one skin concern, leaving consumers with multiple skin concerns obliged to buy multiple products. Although single active products are cheap, having to buy multiple products to get the desired effect may end up being costly for the consumer.

A simple way to tackle this is to simply buy multifunctional products. For example, instead of buying one serum that treats whiteheads and another serum that treats hyperpigmentation, you can simply opt for a single serum that has active ingredients that tackle both hyperpigmentation and whiteheads. This simple change will help you reduce the number of products you use and save money.

3. Buy skincare products which are suitable for your skin type

Using products that aren’t designed for your skin type often leads to the need for additional products. For example, if you have dry acne-prone skin and use an astringent toner to tackle acne, the toner will dry out your skin, leaving you obliged to use another hydrating product to cancel out its drying effects. This extra step/ extra product could have easily been avoided by using a more hydrating toner. If you are trying to save money on your skincare routine, use products made/ suitable for your skin type, this will save you from having to buy a multitude of products.

4. Use the products you already have correctly

When you don't use a product the right way, you either get no results or undesired side effects. And, as most consumers would do in this case, you dash the product in the bin and buy a different product you assume is going to give you better results. But the truth is, no product will give you the right results if you do not use it properly! It doesn’t matter how much more expensive the new product you’ve bought is(price doesn’t always reflect quality and we can talk about this later), if you use a product the wrong way, you will not get the desired effects.

When I was trying to get my acne under control, I bought an exfoliating toner which I used daily. I was expecting this product to help me clear my acne, instead my skin broke out even more. Why? I was using this exfoliative toner daiy and during the day,. Most exfoliative toners are too strong to be used daily, using them daily can often lead to over exfoliation, which is exactly what happened to me!(sigh). I was left with irritated and sensitive skin, and as the typical consumer, I went ahead and bought more products to try and soothe my skin. Using the toner correctly, would have saved me from buying additional products to soothe my skin and saved me some money.

5. Deinfluence Yourself: Don’t Fall for Every Skincare Trend

Social media bombards us with skincare product recommendations and reviews, especially if you follow influencers or skincare enthusiasts.

As a consumer, as soon you open social media, you are bombarded with information. And, if your algorithm is right about you, you are bombarded with information about the things you like. If you are a skincare enthusiast who loves to watch skincare videos or do some skincare related research, you are most likely going to be bombarded with product reviews, asmrs, product recomendations, you name it. Do! Not! Be! Influenced! If you already have a routine that is working for you then don’t buy an extra product just because an influencer promoted it. Scroll. You have the power to scroll without adding to the cart. Scroll and save yourself some money.

With a few smart choices, you can save money while maintaining a good skincare routine. By minimizing unnecessary tools, opting for multifunctional products, and staying true to what works for your skin, you’ll avoid overspending and get the results you want without breaking the bank.
